BIG BIG TRAIN
https://www.bigbigtrain.com

Four times Progressive Music Award winning band, Big Big Train, reached number one in the UK Official rock album charts with their 2017 album, Grimspound. Their new album, Grand Tour entered at 35 in the top 40 of the Official UK Album Charts in May 2019.

In autumn 2019, Big Big Train embarked upon their first ever UK tour, performing music from Grand Tour, alongside songs from their previous recordings, including 2009’s The Underfall Yard album. The shows featured the band’s full live line-up, including the seven band members alongside a five-piece brass ensemble.

The name of the band is taken from a 1970’s train set owned by founder-member / bass guitarist, Greg Spawton. Greg’s family worked on the railways and his childhood home was full of railway memorabilia.

As a consequence of the ‘Big Big’ element in the name and taking their inspiration from 70’s progressive rock, the band’s aim is to make their music dramatic and dynamic. Their songs take the listener on a journey.  If you love the thrills and spills of story telling then you will enjoy this music which is cinematic at times.  For the band’s live performances there is a backdrop with a big screen accompanied with graphics and videos used to enhance the experience.

Many of Big Big Train’s songs tell stories of Britain’s industrial past. These are original songs reflecting back on lost communities.   The band also looks to the future and is inspired by science and the Age of Enlightenment. Songs such as The Florentine, Voyager and East Coast Racer explore science and the relationship between mankind and machine, with machines, made with love and passion, becoming something more than their components.

‘Big Big Train have revisited the sound world of early Genesis and Yes and have managed to create music with great emotional clout’  -JOHN BUNGEY, THE TIMES

‘Grand doesn’t even begin to describe the epic proportions of this magnificent opus. On a rollicking roll of releases with 2017’s Grimspound and The Second Brightest Star, BBT continues full steam ahead to the max on Grand Tour.’’-PAUL DAVIES, DAILY EXPRESS

‘a band that does ‘traditional’ prog rock better than almost anyone since its 70’s heyday’-FRASER LEWRY, CLASSIC ROCK

‘They make beautiful, pastoral quintessentially English music: their name is Big Big Train’ -BOB HARRIS, BBC RADIO TWO

IZZ_Band_2015

“Without question, one of the brightest lights on the American progressive/art rock scene, IZZ melds classic and modern prog influences, strong melodies, and stirring guitar and synthesizer solos into a familiar yet refreshing musical stew” – NEARfest (www.nearfest.com).

IZZ was formed under the musical vision of brothers Tom and John Galgano. In 1996, Tom brought together fellow Manhattanville College classmates — all musically trained — to write, arrange and perform original music.

In addition to Tom (keys and vocals) and John (guitar/bass), IZZ’s first lineup included Greg DiMiceli (drums), Danielle Altieri (vocals), Michele Salustri (vocals) and Brian Coralian (drums) and Phil Gaita (bass/guitar). Together they wrote and released Sliver of a Sun in 1999.

After Danielle, Michele and Phil left the band to pursue other ventures, IZZ continued to write new material and performed intensely in and around New York City between 1999-2002. During this time, Paul Bremner joined the band and brought new elements that helped define the band’s signature sound.

In 2002, IZZ released I Move, their second studio album, to rave reviews and was invited to play at an increasing number of national music festivals, including Progday 2002 in North Carolina and Progwest in Southern California.

Vocalists Anmarie Byrnes and Laura Meade became more involved during the completion of Ampersand, Volume 1, which was released in 2004, and followed by a live performance at Rosfest 2004.

The following year, IZZ completed My River Flows, which was released in 2005. The album was toured at numerous festivals in the American progressive/art rock circuit including festival stalwarts Calprog 2005, 2006 and 2008 and the North East Art Rock Festival (NEARFest 2007).

After an electrifying NEARFest performance, IZZ released their first full-length live album titled IZZ Live at NEARFes” in late 2007.

Released in 2009, The Darkened Room quickly became a favorite among IZZ fans for the intensity and uniqueness of the compositions and performances. The tracks “Can’t Feel the Earth, Part I” and “Can’t Feel the Earth, Part II” in particular display the band’s prowess for melding intricate playing and memorable melodies. In true innovative form IZZ also produced several shorter, concise songs such as “Ticking Away,” “Regret,” and “The Message.” The penultimate piece on the album, “23 Minutes of Tragedy” has become one of IZZ’s most requested live songs as its compelling emotional and dramatic style captures the audience from the first acoustic guitar notes.

Between 2010-2014, IZZ continued to perform live, including three times at the Terra Incognita Festival in Quebec City, Canada. In 2011, IZZ released their first live DVD, IZZ Live featuring performances from NEARFest 2007 and clips from ProgWest (2002).

In 2012, work was completed on Crush of Night. For the Crush of Night album, IZZ had the distinct pleasure of recruiting former Gentle Giant and current 3 Friends guitarist, Gary Green. Gary added his unique playing on two songs. The track “Words and Miracles” includes classic Gary Green guitar playing as well as some backing vocals by Green. The merging of the IZZ sound with this progressive rock guitar idol provided a unique listening experience for IZZ and Gentle Giant fans alike. Tracks such as “Solid Ground” and “You’ve Got a Time” instantly became a mainstay of the IZZ live catalog while the epic Crush of Night suite which spans over 20 minutes of the album, adds to the IZZ canon of adventurous and melodic music.

In 2015, IZZ releasd its 6th full length studio album, Everlasting Instant, which also serves as the final album of the trilogy. The album received critical acclaim throughout the prog rock world. Classic Rock Revisted notes: “It is wonderful to be captivated by music that actually challenges the listener. This album makes one pay attention and it demands multiple listens, repaying the listener with something new and fresh each time the music is played.”

IZZ guitarist Paul Bremner is set to release his solo album in 2016 which features all the members of IZZ.

Valdez

https://www.facebook.com/simon.godfrey.980

valdez

Valdez is an acoustic/electric band from Philadelphia, comprising UK singer/songwriter Simon Godfrey, Echolyn bassist Tom Hyatt, and Joe Cardillo, keyboard player for jazz-rock fusionists Cold Blue Electric.

The group came together as part of series of informal get-togethers at Simon’s Duckland Studios in Philadelphia. The chemistry proved so good, the three decided to form a band and named it Valdez after a ’70s western movie Joe had liked.

Simon Godfrey had fronted the UK band Tinyfish for 5 years before moving from the UK to live and work full time in the US. In those first weeks he met Echolyn bassist Tom Hyatt, during a night out at a Philly comedy club.

“We hit it off immediately” said Tom. “Having a shared sense of humor goes a long way when it comes to creating good music.”

“After that night, Tom and I would get together Thursday evenings just to play songs.” added Simon “When you do as much laughing as you do playing, you know in your heart there is a special chemistry at work.”

In January of 2015 Tom suggested keyboard player Joe Cardillo join in on the sessions. The results we’re immediate. “It was if I we had been playing together for years. The way the three of us locked in with each other’s playing was uncanny.” said Simon. Joe has spent the better part of his life playing keys in a wide variety of bands, performing classics and original music throughout the tri-state area.

In 2016 the band was joined by drummer Scott Miller

The four are currently writing material as Valdez for a release later in the year.

IZZ_Band_2015

“Without question, one of the brightest lights on the American progressive/art rock scene, IZZ melds classic and modern prog influences, strong melodies, and stirring guitar and synthesizer solos into a familiar yet refreshing musical stew” – NEARfest website (www.nearfest.com).

IZZ was formed under the musical vision of brothers Tom and John Galgano. In 1996, Tom brought together fellow Manhattanville College classmates, all musically trained, to write, arrange and perform original, adventurous music.

The first IZZ lineup consisted of Manhattanville classmates Tom Galgano (keys and vocals), Greg DiMiceli (drums), Danielle Altieri (vocals), Michele Salustri (vocals) and Brian Coralian (drums), John Galgano (guitar/bass) and Phil Gaita (bass/guitar). This first iteration of IZZ came together to release the band’s debut album, Sliver of a Sun in 1999. Sliver of a Sun is an eclectic collection of songs that served the band well as their introduction to the progressive/art rock community. Consisting of complex and musically intricate pieces such as “Endless Calling” and “Assurance,” whimsical songs such as “Lornadoone” and “Meteor” as well as more Beatle-esque songs like “Take it Higher” and “She Walked Out the Door,” Sliver of a Sun set the stage for what IZZ would become in the decade to follow. The band still often refers to Sliver of a Sun for its live show as Assurance, Where I Belong, Razor and Endless Calling often find their way onto the IZZ setlist.

Between 1999 – 2002, the IZZ lineup saw some significant changes as vocalists Danielle Alteri and Michele Salustri left the band to pursue outside ventures. Phil Gaita, who shared bass and guitar duties with John Galgano on Sliver of a Sun, departed during this time to explore his own musical passions.

IZZ continued to compose original music and play live shows in and around New York City, performing often at classic NYC venues. It was during this time of intense live performing and writing new material that Paul Bremner joined the band. A virtuoso guitarist with his own unique, melodic style, Paul brought an important element to IZZ that would help fully define the band’s sound and enable them to stand out in the proverbial crowd. His inspired guitar playing, his flair for fiery and emotional solos and his engaging song-writing brought IZZ to a new level both on the stage and in the studio.

With the addition of Paul Bremner to the fold, the Galgano brothers, along with DiMiceli and Coralian entered the studio with an abundance of new material. In 2002, IZZ released I Move, their 2nd studio album, to rave reviews. A 74-minute concept album revolving around a character who loses his musical soul and journeys to rediscover it, the I Move album solidified IZZ’s place in the progressive/art rock music scene and has remained one of the band’s most beloved albums. Blending the sounds of modern fusion, jazz, pop and prog, I Move catapulted IZZ into the consciousness of the progressive rock community. The album produced classic IZZ pieces such as “Coming Like Light,” “Star Evil Gnoma Su,” “Believe,” and “Light from Your Eyes.” I Move also saw the first appearances of vocalists Anmarie Byrnes and Laura Meade, who each sang on one song on the album (“Something True” and “Believe,” respectively) – a foreshadowing of a new IZZ lineup soon to emerge.

On the strength of I Move, IZZ was invited to play at an increasing number of music festivals around the US , including Progday 2002 in North Carolina and Progwest in Southern California. Their shows wowed fans and critics alike and introduced a loyal and broader audience to their exciting and memorable live performances.

As the band continued to write new music and as vocalists Anmarie Byrnes and Laura Meade became more involved with IZZ’s live performances and studio work, IZZ headed back into the studio to finish an album of songs that had remained incomplete after the I Move sessions. Ampersand, Volume 1, an album of 7 new, original studio tracks and 4 live tracks, was released in 2004. Although not a full-length studio album, Ampersand contained several pieces that are regarded as staples of the IZZ catalog and are often performed live, including “The Wait of It All,” “Ancient Memory,” and “Afraid To Be Different.” The album also includes the first IZZ live tracks to be officially released with live versions of “Star Evil Gnoma Su,” “Razor,” “Another Door,” and “Molly’s Jig,” a Paul Bremner solo piece, included on the album.

Shortly after the release of Ampersand, Volume 1, and an impressive live performance at Rosfest 2004, IZZ returned to the studio to finish their next full length studio album, My River Flows. Released in 2005, My River Flows reflected a culmination of what IZZ had been developing during their live performances for the preceding 3 years. Pieces such as “My River Flows” and “Late Night Salvation” are songs that the band had perfected in a live setting prior to recording. The addition of the beautiful and stunning voices of Anmarie Byrnes and Laura Meade are felt throughout the album, but most especially on the dramatic last track: the 20+ minute Deafening Silence. Written almost entirely by Tom Galgano, many IZZ fans consider Deafening Silence to be a defining moment for IZZ during their first decade of studio recordings.

After the release of My River Flows in 2005, IZZ was invited to perform at numerous festivals in the American progressive/art rock circuit including festival stalwarts Calprog 2005, 2006 and 2008 and the North East Art Rock Festival (NEARFest 2007). After their electrifying NEARFest performance, IZZ released their first full-length live album “IZZ Live at NEARFest” in late 2007.
In 2008, IZZ was welcomed back to Southern California to play at yet another CalProg Music Festival. The band also performed that August at the 3RP Festival in Pittsburg, PA along with The Flower Kings, Neal Morse, California Guitar Trio, Spocks Beard and others. In between their live U.S. shows, the band continued to write and record new material for what was to become the band’s next studio album. “The Darkened Room,” the first in a series of 3 related, conceptual albums. Prior to the recording of The Darkened Room, IZZ’s lineup experienced a change as Laura Meade departed from the group to explore her musical theater passion as well as various other professional opportunities. For the next two albums, Anmarie Byrnes would continue to solidify the role of the female voice in IZZ with aplomb.

The Darkened Room album, has become an important part of the material that makes up IZZ’s live shows.

Between 2010-2014, IZZ took the stage in Quebec City, Canada, performing three times at the Terra Incognita Festival to rave reviews. In 2011, IZZ released their first live DVD, “IZZ Live” which included their entire 2007 NEARFest performance as well as clips from other live shows including ProgWest (2002) and an in-studio performance for The Dividing Line Broadcast Network (2003).

In 2012, work was completed on Part 2 of the trilogy, Crush of Night. In 2015, IZZ will release its 6th full length studio album, Everlasting Instant, which also serves as the final album of the trilogy.

Lo-Fi Resistance

As a result of some difficult time and scheduling factors, Lo-Fi Resistance will take on yet a different shape and form at our NJProghouse Progressive Music Series show with IZZ. While it might not be what was expected or desired, I’m always looking for new ways to present the material. I think it will essentially be an electric guitar/vocal solo performance, aided by my good friend Ronen Gordon on percussive objects. Other guests are likely to contribute somewhere in the set as well. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Founded in 2009, Lo-Fi Resistance is the creation of 26 year-old guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Randy McStine. Once dubbed as a “guitar prodigy,” McStine began playing guitar at the age of five and performing publicly at the age of ten. His formative years were spent playing in classic rock cover bands, while also pursuing original music. Randy’s early work was focused on guitar-driven, instrumental rock until he began to sing at the age of fifteen. McStine would spend the remainder of his teens crafting his voice and songwriting, while continuing to expand his diverse musical tastes.

Setting up a small studio in his Upstate New York apartment, McStine started writing and recording new material in 2009 with no clear agenda. As he pooled together funding from solo performances, guitar lessons, and landscaping work, a new passion and focus was evident as the unnamed project continued. Completing a new, full-length album was now McStine’s goal.

Initially performing all of the album’s instrumentation himself, Randy eventually decided to bring in outside support for the drum tracks. McStine blindly reached out to ex-Spock’s Beard drummer Nick D’Virgilio to fill the seat. D’Virgilio would not only perform on most of the songs, but also offer and accept the role of mixing the entire album. Amongst other additional musicians, McStine enlisted longtime vocal favorite and personal friend Dug Pinnick (King’s X), for the end of a song entitled “Moral Disgrace.”

As recording sessions for the new album wrapped up in late 2009, McStine named the project Lo-Fi Resistance. The debut album, A Deep Breath, was released independently on April 6th, 2010. Praised for its unique blending of Progressive Rock, Power Pop, and Singer-Songwriter influences, the album has drawn comparisons to diverse artists such as Todd Rundgren, Roger Waters, Yes, Crowded House, and The Police.

Randy began writing for a second Lo-Fi Resistance album, Chalk Lines, in April of 2011. Undoubtedly the most ambitious project of McStine’s career to date, Chalk Lines both expands on and abandons the foundations of the first album. Drummer Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) is featured throughout the entire album, along with bassists Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), John Giblin (Kate Bush), and Dug Pinnick (King’s X) among its roster. Dave Kerzner (Sound Of Contact, Kevin Gilbert) splits keyboard duties with McStine, along with co-writing three songs and co-producing the album.

Since the release of Chalk Lines, McStine has toured internationally as lead vocalist/co-guitarist of The Pink Floyd Experience, along with filling the live guitar role for Sound Of Contact. Lo-Fi Resistance released a new record, The Age Of Entitlement, in September 2014. This collection sees McStine reaching into different musical territory once again, pulling influence from ’70s electronic music, art-pop, and more. Described as a “mini-album”, The Age Of Entitlement is a digital-only release.

ABOUT THE BANDS

IZZ
Founded by Galgano brothers (Tom and John) IZZ has performed at numerous venues and festivals including: Rosfest 04, CalProg 04/05, Progday 02/06, NEARfest 07 and the Terra Incognita Progressive Rock Festival 2014 . IZZ released their sixth and most recent studio album, Crush of Night, to rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

RESISTOR
Resistor is the rock quartet of Steve Unruh, Fran Turner, Barry Farrands, and Rob Winslow. The band’s sound is characterized by merging modern progressive and rock song structures with an organic classic rock sound. Their classic rock sound is probably due to their preferred recording technique of having everyone play the basic tracks in the same room at the same time, like bands did in the “old days.” This allows RESISTOR’s recorded music to “breathe” as you can hear the band members adjust to each others’ energy, tempo, and feel in real-time.

SONUS UMBRA
Winter Soulstice marks the 5th studio album, and the 20th anniversary of the band Sonus Umbra. Originally formed in Mexico City, Sonus Umbra now resides in Chicago. The current line-up is an all-new ensemble featuring some of Chicago’s best progressive rock musicians: Rich Poston and Tim McCaskey on guitar and vocals, Brian Harris on keyboards, Steve Royce on flute, vocals and holophonics, Roey Ben-Yoseph on lead vocals, with Andy Tillotson on drums and vocals and Luis Nasser on bass the last two standing from previous incarnations. Sonus Umbra plays dark, symphonic prog rock that is equally influenced by bands like Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Rush, Jethro Tull, Iron Maiden and King Crimson.

MAVARA
Mavara, is Iran’s first premier progressive rock band. The name Mavara translates to “beyond everything you think” which speaks to the essence of their music. The band was formed in 2001 by composer/keyboardist Farhood Ghadiri and over the years has had a fluid line-up of members, performing extensively in Tehran and Karaj. Currently Mavara is comprised of Ghadiri along with Ashkan Hamedi/vocals, Sina Khodaiefer/bass, Anis Oveisi/keyboards, and Americans Scott Abene/lead guitar and Jim Welch/Drums. Because of their unique sound and talent, Mavara quickly gained notoriety in Iran, receiving acclaim from the Tehran Industry and Science University as “Best Rock Band” at a Live Performance. Additional honors include an invitatio to perform for the Internet Music Festival, Teheran Avenue in both 2003 and 2005. Their music is best described in terms of their influences, with a generous helping of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Marillion being the first bands that come to mind. In other words, more on the melodic side of Progressive Rock.

MIGHT COULD
Might Could consists of Andy Tillotson, Tim McCaskey, and Aaron Geller on acoustic guitar, and Luis (Gordo) Nasser on acoustic bass. They’ve been writing fun and engaging instrumental music featuring tightly interlocking guitar parts for over a decade. Originally based in Maryland, where the band went to school together, Might Could has mostly relocated to Chicago. Over the past few years, they’ve slowly worked on writing and recording “Relics From The Wasteland,” their first new album since 2007’s “Wood Knot.” The new album features more percussion (even some V-Drums!), a pair of covers, and their most collaborative songwriting to date. Their influences remain similar: rock, metal, classical, jazz (including gypsy jazz), and video game music. Might Could looks forward to promoting all three albums with shows near Chicago, out East, and beyond in 2014.

BAKED BEANS
Baked Beans is a Progressive Rock, Jazz & Funk Band consisting of four Sophomores from Arlington High School: Andrew Peterson(guitar); Kevin Lafleur(guitar/piano); Michael Morrissette(bass); Michael Dillon(drums). They are extremely passionate musicians who toil with their instruments 18 hours a day.

What is NewEARS? A not-for-profit organization of progressive music lovers. The primary goal of NewEARS is to create a community of music enthusiasts dedicated to sharing and promoting progressive rock in the New England area.

District 97 & IZZ on 10/21/12

Thank You! to everyone that came out for the show.
You may write your reviews in the comments section below.

District 97

District 97 (2012)
District 97 (2012)

District 97 is undoubtedly the most musically adventurous rock band in the world to feature an American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist. The band now returns with their second opus Trouble With Machines.  With her fantastic voice, and looks to match, Leslie Hunt has captured the imagination of the male-oriented prog rock scene. Complexity is one of the hallmarks of District 97’s compositions but the album is laced with catchy vocal melodies. The track “The Perfect Young Man” features a guest vocal appearance by KING CRIMSON/ASIA bassist JOHN WETTON. RICH MOUSER who has produced albums for SPOCK’S BEARD and NEAL MORSE mixed the album.

DISTRICT 97 was formed in the fall of 2006 by drummer Jonathan Schang, keyboardist Rob Clearfield, bassist Patrick Mulcahy and guitarist Sam Krahn (replaced in 2008 by current guitarist Jim Tashjian). The foursome from Chicago honed a no-holds barred style of Liquid Tension Experiment-inspired Instrumental Rock before deciding the right vocalist was needed to complement their sound; enter 2007 American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist, Leslie Hunt. With a look, sound and stage presence comparable to a young Ann Wilson from Heart, Leslie’s dynamic performances pushed the band into a new direction that forged a unique marriage between accessible, catchy vocal melodies and an adventurous instrumental prowess. She was followed shortly thereafter by one of Chicago’s finest young guitarists, Jim Tashjian. With this new blend of charisma and stellar musicianship in place, their live shows at festivals such as CalProg and RoSfest, and numerous appearances across the USA cemented the band as a force to be reckoned with onstage.
In May 2010, the band signed with Laser’s Edge, the foremost home of new Progressive music. Laser’s Edge oversaw worldwide physical and digital release of District 97’s debut effort, Hybrid Child, which was released to worldwide acclaim in September 2010, and went on to top many “Best of 2010” lists. Appearing on the recording is cellist extraordinaire Katinka Kleijn of the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who also appears on their upcoming Summer 2012 release, Trouble With Machines.
Building on the strengths of Hybrid Child, Trouble With Machines pushes the envelope even further, and solidifies District 97’s position at the forefront of uncompromising Rock music.

IZZ (2012)
IZZ (2012)

Founded by Galgano brothers (Tom and John) IZZ has performed at numerous venues and festivals including, Rosfest 04, CalProg 04/05/08, Progday 02/06 and Nearfest 07. IZZ released their latest studio album, Crush of Night, on May 1, 2012.

IZZ’s musicians are talented multi-instrumentalists and adept at multi-part vocal harmonies. Lead vocals are shared between the Galgano brothers (Tom and John), while the percussion duties are split in a decidedly unique way: Greg DiMiceli plays an acoustic kit while Brian Coralian uses his various acoustic and electronic percussives to accent and enhance the rhythmic structure of IZZ’s tunes. The result is a fascinating palette of sounds and a bold statement in a genre where fans and musicians too often cringe at the thought of any kind of electronic percussion. Guitarist Paul Bremner brings his own emotional, virtuosic guitar work into the mix and along with John on bass and Tom on keyboards, round out the instrumentation. The stunning voice of Anmarie Byrnes on lead and backing vocals complete the unique IZZ sound.
