Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto, the powerhouse bass and drums of the group King Crimson for a few decades, bring that tradition to all their playing. Levin plays the Chapman Stick, from which the band takes it’s name. Having bass and guitar strings, the Chapman Stick functions at times like two instruments. Markus Reuter plays his self-designed touch style guitar – again covering much more ground than a guitar or a bass. And Mastelotto’s drumming encompasses not just the acoustic kit, but a unique electronic setup too, allowing him to add loops, samples, percussion, and more.

TONY LEVIN
Born in Boston, Tony Levin started out in classical music, playing bass in the Rochester Philharmonic. Then moving into jazz and rock, he has had a notable career, recording and touring with Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Yes, Alice Cooper, and many more. He has also released 5 solo CDs and three books. In addition to touring with Stick Men, he is currently a member of King Crimson and Peter Gabriel Band, and jazz bands Levin Brothers and L’Image. His popular website, tonylevin.com, featured one of the web’s first blogs, and has over 4 million visits.

MARKUS REUTER
Markus is a composer, guitarist, and producer. Initially trained as a pianist, he subsequently studied Robert Fripp’s Guitar Craft and learned to play the Chapman Stick, later moving onto the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released several solo recordings and worked extensively with other musicians. He is one of the core members of the experimental band Centrozoon, is half of the duo Tuner (with Pat Mastelotto) and was also a member of Europa String Choir. Reuter has collaborated with Ian Boddy, Robert Rich, No-Man singer Tim Bowness, and many others.

PAT MASTELOTTO
Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 20 years with King Crimson.

Having met through the Three of a Perfect Pair Music Camp in 2011, bassists Julie Slick and Marco Machera started collaborating in April 2014, when Julie flew to Italy after her Crimson ProjeKCt European tour, to play a short run of shows in Tuscany. The rehearsal went very well, and very spontaneously, some brand new songs were written and in turn, played to some very appreciative Italian audiences. The impromptu ‘bass duets’ ended up being so satisfying and well-received that Julie and Marco eventually decided to write more material together and record an album, “Fourth Dementia” (July 2014).
The project reinvents the role of electric bass and brilliantly displays the songwriting abilities of the duo; a captivating combination of loop music, ambient soundscapes and interlocking bass patterns, always melodic yet aggressive and edgy at times.
On this very special album release tour, the duo will be joined by legendary drummer Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr Mister, XTC, Stick Men, Chrysta Bell), and guitarist extraordinaire Tim Motzer (Ursula Rucker, David Sylvian, Markus Reuter, DJ King Britt, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jamaaladeen Tacuma). Designer Dejha Ti will accompany the music with her stunning visuals that will surely render this a night not soon to forget (and certainly not be missed)!

beardspace

A six-piece psychedelic-technical explosion of sound and color. A wide range of strong emotions captured through sound … planned sections of improvisation combined with intricate composition. Sometimes mellow and pretty with vocal harmonies—sometimes heavy and ripping with guitars, drums and synths—always grooving. The Beardly Beast that will certainly move you ’til the end.

Out of the Beardspace is a six-piece experimental rock band from South Jersey. Since their formation in the summer of 2010,they have released two EPs and a full-length album, and played all over the Philadelphia/south Jersey area at venues such as the Trocadero, the Stone Pony, the North Star Bar, Underground Arts, and Legendary Dobbs. In the summer of 2011 they moved into a house in Cherry Hill, NJ together and, in the summer of 2012 they spent six months living on a mountain farm in Linden, Virginia growing their own food, living in tents, cooking every meal over an open fire, and practicing sustainable living. Out of the Beardspace has been its most active in 2013. They kicked off the warm season with their annual festival, ‘Beardfest,’ which was the most successful edition so far.

Graphic novel artist forms new progressive rock project, After his art being commissioned by former members of King Crimson.

February 5, 2013 by NJProghouse

Specimen13Graphic novel artist and percussionist Denis Rodier has joined forces with ex-Talisma guitarist Martin Vanier to release their own progressive rock musical project called Specimen13.

On February 19, 2013, Specimen13 will release their debut EP Echosystem, which features guest performance from Levin and Mastelotto as well as progressive rock heavyweights Trey Gunn and Markus Reuter. Produced by Reuter and Unsung Productions, the EP also features Unsung artists Adrian Benavides and Alex Dowerk.

The initial EP features powerful eclectic Prog Rock similar to the contemporary stylings of Tool, Porcupine Tree, and the more recent works of King Crimson.

The release of Echosystem is the introductory phase of the Specimen13 project. To build on Vanier and Rodier’s creative synergy, the latter will add his years of graphic novel and visual art experience to take the project in multimedia directions.

Rodier has begun work on a complete graphic novel to accompany the project. The novel will be serialized on the web and plans to develop Web TV type videos to accompany the music are also on the table. Specimen13 is at work on a full length CD as well, which, more than likely, will feature the same team of all-star collaborators.

German prog rock site Babyblaue Seiten wrote of an early release copy of the EP: “Echosystem is …impressive. Industrial rhythms, jagged guitar riffs, powerful soundscapes, scratchy bass and Touch guitar runs whirl lively and powerful. Sounds are mixed up in quite a breathtaking manner. It is powerful, intricate, modern, entertaining progressive rock of the modern age.”

Rodier is a graphic novel author that has collaborated on some of the most popular American comic series in history, such as Batman, Captain America and above all, Superman. It was his work in these publications that earned him his greatest accolades, particularly the story of “The Death of Superman”, best seller and winner of numerous awards Since 2008 Denis has been busy on his own series L’Ordre des Dragons and L’Apogee des Dragons, published in Europe by Soleil Editions.
