ABOUT THE BANDS

IZZ
Founded by Galgano brothers (Tom and John) IZZ has performed at numerous venues and festivals including: Rosfest 04, CalProg 04/05, Progday 02/06, NEARfest 07 and the Terra Incognita Progressive Rock Festival 2014 . IZZ released their sixth and most recent studio album, Crush of Night, to rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

RESISTOR
Resistor is the rock quartet of Steve Unruh, Fran Turner, Barry Farrands, and Rob Winslow. The band’s sound is characterized by merging modern progressive and rock song structures with an organic classic rock sound. Their classic rock sound is probably due to their preferred recording technique of having everyone play the basic tracks in the same room at the same time, like bands did in the “old days.” This allows RESISTOR’s recorded music to “breathe” as you can hear the band members adjust to each others’ energy, tempo, and feel in real-time.

SONUS UMBRA
Winter Soulstice marks the 5th studio album, and the 20th anniversary of the band Sonus Umbra. Originally formed in Mexico City, Sonus Umbra now resides in Chicago. The current line-up is an all-new ensemble featuring some of Chicago’s best progressive rock musicians: Rich Poston and Tim McCaskey on guitar and vocals, Brian Harris on keyboards, Steve Royce on flute, vocals and holophonics, Roey Ben-Yoseph on lead vocals, with Andy Tillotson on drums and vocals and Luis Nasser on bass the last two standing from previous incarnations. Sonus Umbra plays dark, symphonic prog rock that is equally influenced by bands like Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Rush, Jethro Tull, Iron Maiden and King Crimson.

MAVARA
Mavara, is Iran’s first premier progressive rock band. The name Mavara translates to “beyond everything you think” which speaks to the essence of their music. The band was formed in 2001 by composer/keyboardist Farhood Ghadiri and over the years has had a fluid line-up of members, performing extensively in Tehran and Karaj. Currently Mavara is comprised of Ghadiri along with Ashkan Hamedi/vocals, Sina Khodaiefer/bass, Anis Oveisi/keyboards, and Americans Scott Abene/lead guitar and Jim Welch/Drums. Because of their unique sound and talent, Mavara quickly gained notoriety in Iran, receiving acclaim from the Tehran Industry and Science University as “Best Rock Band” at a Live Performance. Additional honors include an invitatio to perform for the Internet Music Festival, Teheran Avenue in both 2003 and 2005. Their music is best described in terms of their influences, with a generous helping of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Marillion being the first bands that come to mind. In other words, more on the melodic side of Progressive Rock.

MIGHT COULD
Might Could consists of Andy Tillotson, Tim McCaskey, and Aaron Geller on acoustic guitar, and Luis (Gordo) Nasser on acoustic bass. They’ve been writing fun and engaging instrumental music featuring tightly interlocking guitar parts for over a decade. Originally based in Maryland, where the band went to school together, Might Could has mostly relocated to Chicago. Over the past few years, they’ve slowly worked on writing and recording “Relics From The Wasteland,” their first new album since 2007’s “Wood Knot.” The new album features more percussion (even some V-Drums!), a pair of covers, and their most collaborative songwriting to date. Their influences remain similar: rock, metal, classical, jazz (including gypsy jazz), and video game music. Might Could looks forward to promoting all three albums with shows near Chicago, out East, and beyond in 2014.

BAKED BEANS
Baked Beans is a Progressive Rock, Jazz & Funk Band consisting of four Sophomores from Arlington High School: Andrew Peterson(guitar); Kevin Lafleur(guitar/piano); Michael Morrissette(bass); Michael Dillon(drums). They are extremely passionate musicians who toil with their instruments 18 hours a day.

What is NewEARS? A not-for-profit organization of progressive music lovers. The primary goal of NewEARS is to create a community of music enthusiasts dedicated to sharing and promoting progressive rock in the New England area.

Out of the Beardspace Releases New Single “The Smile” and Announces their Nomination for the Tri-State Indie Awards!

January 22, 2014 by NJProghouse

Out of the Beardspace
About “The Smile”
Out of the Beardspace’s new single, “The Smile” is a journey in sound and emotion. The song takes listeners back to the bands pursuit of an idealistic way of life in rural Virginia. While living outdoors on a mountain farm and attempting to grow a large portion of their own food, the band discovered that conflict exists even in the most beautiful natural places. “The Smile” tells the tale of an unfortunate and consequential clash between band members and the farm’s proud and conservative grounds keeper. The song starts with somber reflection, then spins off into confusion and anger before reaching its fiery climax. This ambitious and adventurous piece is poised to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.
“An intimate ballad built around quiet finger-picking, bells, and synthesizers supporting thoughtful vocals about misleading smiles replicates its lyrical content when it suddenly shifts into high gear, slamming riffs and solos from dueling guitars and even a horn section together with increasingly complex rhythms before returning to whence it came.” –Music Without Labels

About Out of the Beardspace:
In a psychedelic explosion of sound and color, Out of the Beardspace expresses its wide range of emotions. Planned sections of improvisation flow seamlessly in and out of compositions which fuse jazz, pop, funk, and rock into a Beardly Beast that will certainly move you. Beyond sound, Out of the Beardspace is also committed to facilitating a conversation about redesigning human systems for a healthier future. In addition to the new single, Out of the Beardspace plans to release an album later this year. Out of the Beardspace also looks forward to their annual music festival, Beardfest.

Help Support Roxy and Dukes, the Home of the NJProghouse Progressive Music Series

November 2, 2013 by NJProghouse

Our good friends at Roxy & Dukes (The HOME of the NJProghouse) are holding a indiegogo campaign to raise funds for improvements and expansions.

The R&D folks are an amazing group of dedicated people who strive to help promote ALL of the arts. They have many great ideas that can only come to fruition with your help.

The great thing about indiegogo is that with your pledge, no matter how big or small, Roxy & Dukes will receive that money, there is no “you did not meet your goal, sorry” , every dollar pledged will go towards their goals. We consider everyone at R&D (Jim, Lenny, Dee, David, Eddie and the rest of the crew) part of the NJP family.

Please help us in supporting their goal, as we look forward to many years of bringing you the best in live progressive music straight from Roxy and Dukes Roadhouse!

Thank You!

– Jim, Alan, Amy, Jon, Ray, mikE, Bony, Michy, Nor and the rest of the NJP “Staph”

Welcome to Roxy & Dukes Roadhouse!

R&D’s is many things, an entertainment venue, a cafe’/restaurant and a nightclub. But more than that, it’s a place where art is created and performed, where people from all walks are welcome to enjoy themselves with their friends or to meet new ones, a place to let your hair down and explore your wilder side and experience a wide variety of entertainment that you would normally need to travel far to and visit multiple destinations to see and hear.

Here at R&D’s we do our best to excite and entertain our patrons while providing a relaxing, warm, comfortable environment all at the same time with a style, borrowed from many, but all our own.

We have been very fortunate in being able to bring our patrons a very diverse calendar of events in the past two and a half years. Our stage has hosted original music and stage productions ranging from Jazz, Blues, Swing, Americana, Blue Grass, Indie, Alternative, Rockabilly, Punk, Ska, Metal, Circus Sideshow, Bellydance, Vaudeville, Burlesque, Comedy and more. It’s been our great pleasure that so many varied and talented artists whether they be local, from around the country and many from around the world such as Canada, South America, England, Germany, France, Austria, The Netherlands and as far away as Australia have come to join us on our stage and to be able to share that with all of you.

Our goal is to continue to always do just that and to always strive to bring our patrons the best experiences that we can.Beyond bringing in great artists, we often host themed events. For example, we have  Zombie Beauty Pageants, Beard and Mustache contests, Steampunk parties, Alternative Model and Photographer networking events, Classic car gatherings and art gallery showings and auctions. We have also become the preferred venue for our local School of Rock, giving young student musicians an opportunity to play out in front of an audience. In our off hours we open our doors for instructors to teach workshops such as Bellydance Lessons, Pin-up model classes, Burlesque workshops and Swing dance lessons. Our space is often used for photo shoots and Band Video shoots. Often there is no rental fee for these events, we are happy to help out our area artists in any way we can.

To that end, we feel that certain improvements to R&D’s would help us better serve our customers as well as the many artists that join us here which brings us to why we have launched this Indiegogo funding campaign. The items we are seeking help with are:

 1) An “Old Timey”  roofed front porch added to the entrance of the club. It would be 40′ wide and 12′ deep with a small built in area for acoustic musicians. The porch would be furnished with cocktail tables and chairs for extended bar and restaurant service and decorated to reflect old Roadhouse porches from a bygone era. Our intention is to add a new experience for our customers while also providing an element that draws attention to the establishment from passersby that have yet to visit us. Estimated Cost:$15,000

 2) The installation of a full service coffee and espresso bar.  We feel that a coffee bar will provide further choices to our customers to enjoy a tasty treat while visiting us. Not all customers come for dinner or appetizers and not all customers drink alcohol and even many that do, often, responsibly seek an alternative. We also feel, inclusion of a coffee bar may help us to provide extended operating hours and to serve a wider range of patrons. Estimated Cost: $30,000

 3) Upgrades to our sound system and stage. In the few years that we have been open we have hosted hundreds of musical and theatrical acts at R&D’s. The range of talent has been astounding. To better serve our audience and the artists themselves, we would like to install Improvements to the sound system including Powered PA speakers, Powered Monitor speakers, a new sound board and additional microphones. Additionally we would like to upgrade our stage lighting to LED lights in order to save energy and money while also providing a cooler and more comfortable experience for our artists. Lastly, our stage surface, currently plywood would be replaced by a professional surface meant to absorb sound beneficially and provide a more safe and comfortable platform for our more energetic performers. Estimated Cost: $15,000

4) Upgrades to our bar. These would include soft drink and juice gun delivery systems that would reduce storage, lower our recycling waste, save money and help our bartenders and servers be more efficient. Adding beer tap systems in order to provide more varied and affordable selections to our customers. Estimated Cost: $15,000

 5) An outdoor Tiki Bar and lounge. This would entail decoratively fencing off a 40′ x 40′ area of our back yard immediately adjacent to our bar. Building a 12′ x12′ roofed tiki hut with bar and stools as well as 10 sets of patio furniture and umbrellas. There would be a new exit constructed leading from the interior bar to the exterior Tiki Lounge. Again, we feel this will add to more diverse experiences for our customers, providing outdoor entertainment  during our Spring, Summer and Fall months.Estimated Cost: $25,000

With your help, these various projects and improvements to our already successful model can be realized in order to bring a greater level of entertainment to our diverse audience and to help us to continue to provide a productive venue where the arts in many forms can continue to thrive for many years to come.

Thank you for your time and generous donation!

The Flower Kings to release thier new studio album ‘Desolation Rose’ late October!

September 12, 2013 by NJProghouse

http://www.flowerkings.se/

tfk_desolationrose

Swedish progressive-rock royalty The Flower Kings have had a busy year since regrouping in 2012 for the ‘Banks Of Eden’ album, and with a new creative vigor the band are following that with the fantastic new album ‘Desolation Rose’ due out on 28th October 2013. The artwork, once again created by Silas Toball, can be viewed above and the band had this to say about the forthcoming release:

“Being somewhat of a political statement, the epic theme of “Desolation Rose” is a logical step in a time where perpetual war, famine, environmental threats, religious conflicts dominate the media and our minds. This is a time to wake up and the music on this album takes you on a journey where you are forced to questions what the mainstream media feed us and to rethink your whole world view on all of the above. This is in many ways a typical Flower Kings album but we have also taken it into another realm where we do take chances and where you may struggle to get into the music – or the lyrics – but trust me when I say that you will be rewarded, as this may be our most involved, important and interesting album ever.” (Roine Stolt – Sept 2013)

The track-listing for the album is as follows:

  1. Tower ONE 13:39
  2. Sleeping Bones 04:16
  3. Desolation Road 04:00
  4. White Tuxedos 06:30
  5. The Resurrected Judas 08:24
  6. Silent Masses 06:17
  7. Last Carnivore 04:22
  8. Dark Fascist Skies 06:05
  9. Blood Of Eden 03:12
  10. Silent Graveyards 02:52

Earlier this year, The Flower Kings embarked on a very special tour alongside Neal Morse & Mike Portnoy to celebrate InsideOutMusic’s 20th Anniversary, playing to sold out crowds across Europe and the US.

Sound of Contact Postpones North American tour

August 1, 2013 by NJProghouse

SOC_3man_square

from the Sound of Contact Website: http://www.soundofcontact.com/tour-dates/

Dear friends and fans of Sound of Contact!

Due to delays and complications from the US embassy in the UK, Simon Collins and key SOC personnel were unable to obtain work visas in time to perform with Sound of Contact in the upcoming YEStival in Camden, New Jersey this Saturday. We also deeply regret to inform everyone that as of today, we must postpone our North American tour this August / September until Spring next year.

Logistical issues derived from VISA complications and low ticket sales in a few locations have impacted on our ability to effectively honor all dates at this time.

We sincerely apologize for the disappointment and potential inconvenience that this may cause.

Please know that we have every intention of re-grouping and re-scheduling as many of the dates as possible. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Simon, Dave and Matt

People who have purchased tickets for the NJProghouse show for September 9th will automatically be issued a refund within the next 48 hours.
